HAN 6.1 Update

This Knowledge Base article provides important information on planning an update to version 6.1

The HAN 6.1 release includes the following new features:

  • HAN-Library: The HAN Library allows the logic for logging in to a resource provider to be loaded centrally. This logic contains all the necessary configurations, meaning that only the login credentials need to be entered. Users are notified of updates to the logic and new versions can be downloaded. This ensures that the central configurations are always up to date.

  • HAN-Library-Request-Manager: A ticketing system integrated into HAN allows you to submit a request to H+H if no login logic is yet available for an online resource. Under the existing HAN 6 subscription contract you can use this system to submit requests to H+H to create new login logic. Updates resulting from changes made by the provider can also be requested via the system and processed by H+H under the terms of the contract.

  • HAN-Statistics: The statistics feature has been completely redesigned for HAN 6. The new statistics feature is faster, more efficient, and more powerful. The following new features make this possible:

    • Configurable calculation templates for main and cross-tabulation tables: Results can be broken down by period, cost center and user.

    • Scheduled Automatic Calculation: Set up a calculation to run automatically after one day, one month, one quarter, one half-year or one year has elapsed. HAN automatically performs the calculation according to the stored template once the period has ended.

    • Export statistical reports and underlying data as CSV files: This allows you to reuse the calculated data or the underlying data in other systems.

    • Parallel License Report: The new license report shows you how the registered licenses have been used and how often and for how long parallel use occurred. The report also shows how often users were denied access because the maximum number of licenses was in use. A license report can be generated automatically at specified intervals.

    • License Monitoring: HAN can send email notifications if no usage, insufficient usage, or excessive usage (exceeding the maximum usage limit) is detected. The time interval during which usage is monitored, as well as the thresholds for minimum and maximum usage can be configured individually.

    • Role-Based Statistics: HAN 6.1 offers three different roles for working with statistics:
      • Statistics Administrator: This role allows you to create templates. The templates specify which users are granted access to the results. Only statistics administrators can edit or manage existing templates. Results are calculated automatically (on a scheduled basis) or by the statistics administrator.
      • Statistics User: Statistics users can view and export results that have already been calculated in the Results Viewer. Users with this role can only see the results that have been assigned to them.
      • Statistics Recipients: Statistics recipients receive calculated results via email as CSV files. Persons with this role do not need access to the HAN Client and may be located outside their own institution (e.g., contacts at publishing houses).

  • Search Engine Support: A HAN resource can be configured to indicate whether it is a metasearch engine. In this case, for all links that do not belong to this page, the HAN Web API is called, and a targeted link to other resources managed in HAN is created.

  • Support for presenting your own files via HAN: With HAN 6.1, files (e.g., PDF documents) can be made available centrally through the HAN system. Access to these files can be protected using permissions and other HAN mechanisms and can be analyzed statistically.

  • Support for single sign-on in a domain via Kerberos

In addition, the update includes various optimizations and improvements to HAN 6.0.

Important Change to HAN 6.0:

The start URL for the HAN internal single sign-on modules has changed. Going forward, the server name will be prefixed with "sso.". For example, the server name will change from hanserver.domain.com to sso.hanserver.domain.com. Please update the start URLs accordingly if you use these modules.

Note:

If you use the HAN-internal variable "__hanserver__," it will automatically take the change into account.

The update to HAN 6.1 can be performed either as an update from HAN 6.0 or directly from version 5. In this case, please refer to the KB article on the HAN 6.0 update.

If you upgrade HAN 6.0 to HAN 6.1, you must also upgrade any HAN clients that are already installed to version 6.1.

Please note that in HAN 6.1 the documentation is not yet included in the software at this time. The documentation will be provided at a later date.

Note on the versions used:

HAN web service: Apache 2.4.68 with OpenSSL 3.6.3

HAN database: MongoDB 8.0.28
